Team USA finally took back the one Olympic medal that had been haunting it for decades. The White House made sure Canada noticed.

After the United States stunned Canada 2-1 in overtime to win men's hockey gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics, the official White House social account jumped into the celebration with a pointed jab at former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.

The win snapped a 46-year Olympic gold drought for U.S. men's hockey and came on a golden goal from Jack Hughes, who buried a cross ice feed from Zach Werenski in overtime. Chaos followed. In Milan. In living rooms across the U.S. And apparently on social media.

The White House quote posted an old Trudeau line from last year that read, "You can't take our country and you can't take our game," and responded with an image of a bald eagle standing over a Canadian goose. Subtle it was not.

Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III piled on too, reposting Trudeau's words with a simple caption. "We took your game."

Hughes did not care about the noise. He cared about the moment.

"I'm so proud to be American today," he said afterward. "That's a great Canadian team, but this means everything."

Canada still owns the history. The United States owns this one. And judging by the reaction, they plan to enjoy it for a while.
