The altercation occurred over the weekend at KnokX Pro Wrestling in Sun Valley, Calif. The organization, which runs wrestling entertainment and training shows, hosted events Friday and Saturday.
According to video streamed on Kick, Jackson, a 25-year-old MMA fighter, was involved in a backstage confrontation with wrestler Stewart Smith, known as "Syko Stu." The footage showed Smith striking Jackson in the head with a drink can. Later, during Smith's match, Jackson entered the ring in what initially appeared to be a scripted moment. Instead, he slammed Smith to the mat and unleashed a flurry of blows until Smith lay bleeding and motionless.
TMZ reports that the Los Angeles Police Department responded to the scene on Saturday night and filed a report. The incident remains under investigation.
KnokX Pro Wrestling issued a statement on Sunday condemning Jackson's actions.
"What was supposed to be a planned and agreed upon wrestling spot, turned into a selfish, irresponsible act of violence against Mr. Smith," the statement read. "This egregious act is reprehensible and never should have occurred. In the 17 years of operation of KnokX Pro Wrestling Academy, there has never been anything as heinous take place such as this and we apologize to our patrons and fans."
The promotion added that Smith's well-being remains their top priority. A source told TMZ that Jackson will be permanently banned from KnokX events.
It is unclear if police questioned Jackson when they arrived on Saturday night. Video from the event appeared to show him angrily leaving the venue after the incident.
Rampage Jackson addressed the situation in a statement of his own, saying his son misunderstood the circumstances.
"Raja was unexpectedly hit in the side of the head by him moments before Smith's match," Rampage wrote. "Raja was told that he could get his 'payback' in the ring. I thought it was part of the show. It was bad judgment, and a work that went wrong. Raja is an MMA fighter, not a pro wrestler, and had no business involved in an event like this."
Smith was later confirmed to be awake and stable.
