Smackdown Live superstar John Cena is returning to WWE television on July 4, naturally, and with that only being a month away details about the creative team's plans for him have already started to emerge.

Last night, it was revealed that even though Cena was returning on Smackdown Live, he is now being billed as a "free agent," which is a new development.
Because he's being billed as a "free agent," many fans and writers have begun speculating as to whether or not this was opening the door to a potential Roman Reigns vs. Cena match at SummerSlam later this year.
However, it doesn't look like that's going to be the case for Cena, either, as Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer noted this week that current creative plans don't include a "passing of the torch" match between Cena and Reigns.

"Also seen on Raw last night, Roman Reigns revealed he will be announcing his plans for WWE SummerSlam this year next week on Raw. This lead to speculation that Roman Reigns vs John Cena might be in the works for SummerSlam, however, Dave Meltzer noted on today's Wrestling Observer Radio that current plans do not call for Cena and Reigns to face each other at the big PPV this summer."
Cena has not been seen on WWE television since proposing to longtime girlfriend Nikki Bella at WrestleMania 33.
