Janey Lee and Kylie Walton were testing their truck ahead of the San Felipe 250 when a fire started under Lee's seat. She remained trapped in the cockpit due to the seatbelts jamming.
Instead of extricating herself from the vehicle, Walton worked to undo her teammate's seatbelts. She achieved this but also severely burnt her hands in the process.
Once out of the truck, Lee performed a stop, drop, and roll maneuver to extinguish the flames on her. According to her husband, Eric, her gloves and helmet prevented burns on her face and hands, but she sustained extensive burns on her legs.
Lee sustained Stage 2 and Stage 3 burns on her legs, shoulder, and arm. She underwent surgery after arriving at a burn center and then underwent another surgery days later.
Walton sustained Stage 2 and Stage 3 burns to her hands. Walton underwent surgery on her hands, which included stapling pig bladder on her hands.

Both athletes continue to recover after surgery, but they had an opportunity to spend time together. They sat at the hospital and watched the San Felipe 250 on Saturday. They cheered on fellow Monster Energy athletes, which included Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone.
According to the Road 2 Recovery account, which is raising money for treatment costs, emergency personnel responded to the scene of the incident. They provided on-site care before airlifting both racers to the specialized burn center in the United States.
Now these initial surgeries are complete, the recovery process can continue. Though this will be an extensive and painful journey.
"Moments like this remind us how quickly lives can change—and how strong this community truly is," said Road 2 Recovery in a statement.
"Kylie's courage and selflessness saved a life. Now it's our turn to come together and support both of these incredible athletes as they fight their way back."
