The longtime partner of NASCAR unveiled its list of finalists for the Comcast Community Champion of the Year. This trio includes Legacy Motor Club driver Erik Jones, Charlotte Motor Speedway Senior Director of HR/IT Susan McKee, and NASCAR Productions Senior Manager of Facility Operations Scott Crowell.
Jones launched the Erik Jones Foundation in 2021 and has used the foundation to address community needs through three main initiatives. The first is supporting reading literacy through the Read With Erik events, donating book vending machines, and launching a pen pal program.
The second initiative highlights early cancer detection and care. Jones's foundation has donated thousands of dollars to the Melanoma Research Foundation, brought a mobile skin screening center to race fans, and taken over the Window of Hope program used to raise money for breast cancer screenings and care.
Finally, the third initiative focuses on animals. Jones has donated to animal shelters and partnered with organizations such as the Mid-Michigan K9 Association, Adopt-A-Pet Fenton (Michigan), and Krissie Newman's Rescue Ranch (North Carolina).
Crowell, a former pit crew member and team truck driver, has spent years supporting the special needs community while volunteering with the Joyful Hearts Organization.
He also spearheaded the establishment of the Willow's Wish Foundation after his youngest granddaughter was diagnosed with a rare trisomy condition. This foundation currently focuses on installing inclusive changing tables in parks and public spaces.
Back in 2010, McKee established a group of volunteers at Charlotte Motor Speedway. This group, the Pit Crew, has worked in the community over the years while organizing blood drives, working with local nonprofit organizations, putting together free weekend food provisions for children facing food insecurity, and refreshing Blessing Boxes with non-perishable food items and baby supplies.
"We are continuously inspired by the stories we receive, each showcasing the significant contributions from individuals across the NASCAR industry," said Matt Lederer, vice president of brand partnerships and engagement at Xfinity, in a statement.
"This year's finalists are exceptional individuals united by a shared mission of making a positive impact in their communities and beyond."
The winner of the Comcast Community Champion will be honored after the season's end. A panel of Comcast and NASCAR executives, along with 2023 Comcast Community Champion winner Ryan Vargas, will pick the winner.
