Ford Performance unveils electric NASCAR prototype

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ford Performance has unveiled its next big project, one with ties to stock car racing. The manufacturer has shown off its Mustang Mach E electric prototype.

Global Director of Ford Performance Mark Rushbrook made the announcement Thursday night in Charlotte as the company celebrated the launch of the 2025 racing season. He had some assistance from veteran NASCAR driver David Ragan, who pulled the sheet off of the prototype in front of more than 2,000 attendees.

"No, we're not racing there full electric," Rushbrook told the crowd. "Of course, we love our V8 engines in NASCAR, but we want to go experiment, we want to learn about the technology in this space and create some spectacles and fun along the way."

According to the announcement, the Mach E electric prototype race car takes several pieces from the current Cup Series car. In this particular instance, that means the Dark Horse Mustang used full-time by Team Penske, Wood Brothers Racing, RFK Racing, Front Row Motorsports, and Rick Ware Racing.

The list of parts and pieces includes the suspension, brakes, steering, and wheels. The Mach E prototype NASCAR car features three motors, a full carbon fiber tub, and a 78 kWh battery.

Ford Performance has dabbled in the electric space for several years. The company has its fully-electric SuperVan 4.2 that it used to race at Pikes Peak. It also used the Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck for the prestigious hill climb. Both times, the motorsports division of the company celebrated wins.

An electric car for NASCAR is a new addition to the Ford Performance lineup, and the announcement follows another unveiling last season in Chicago.

NASCAR officially unveiled the ABB NASCAR EV Prototype during the race weekend at Chicago and provided the first full look at the car. The design had been leaked in the past, but this marked the first time that NASCAR had shown it to the public.

Like the Ford Performance version, NASCAR's prototype features three electric motors and a 78 kWh battery. The tunable powertrain can produce 1,000 kW at peak power.
