Speaking with Sports Business Journal at last weekend's Las Vegas Grand Prix, F1 executive Ian Holmes said that the global racing series is "keen to explore" a sequel to the blockbuster racing film. He noted that the film has done very well for Formula 1 but that the timing has to be right.

As Holmes explained to SBJ, new regulations are coming into the sport next year. This will lead to changes with the cars, and he said that you don't want to make a film and have the cars be different.

"Taking into consideration the work that everyone put in which we have to be mindful of, if a sensible proposition could be put together we'd be really interested in exploring it," Holmes said.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, "F1: The Movie" starred Pitt as a washed up F1 driver who came out of retirement to team up with a younger driver. At first, Pitt's character, Sonny Hayes, clashed with his teammate played by Damson Idris, but they ultimately learned to work together.

The film didn't explicitly leave an opportunity for a potential sequel, but it also did not close the door. Pitt's character remained in the world, pursuing high-octane thrills out in California.

"F1: The Movie" also starred Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, Sarah Niles, and Tobias Menzies among others. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton served as an executive producer and played a pivotal role in the film's final Grand Prix.

"F1: The Movie" had an estimated budget of $2 million. It earned more than $57 million in the United States and Canada during opening weekend. It then went on to gross more than $631 million worldwide. The majority of these numbers came from overseas markets.
