The seven-time champion broke through on Sunday in the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix after his team made some bold strategy choices. The team opted for a three-stop strategy, which ultimately benefited Hamilton as he gained a free stop under the virtual safety car.
The Ferrari driver took the lead and built up his advantage over Mercedes driver George Russell and defending champion Lando Norris. Kimi Antonelli, who had entered the weekend with five straight wins, had to retire from the race in the closing laps.

This became far from just a simple win. It marked the end of a nearly two-year winless streak. The last time Hamilton stood atop the podium was on July 28, 2024, at Circuit de Spa Francorchamps in Belgium. He drove for Mercedes at the time.
The 2025 season marked a major change in the sport as he moved from Mercedes to Ferrari. The first year of this partnership featured some struggles as Hamilton had no starts from pole and no podium finishes.
The veteran driver entered the 2026 season with confidence due to the car changes. He and Ferrari then began performing at a more consistent level. He posted three podium finishes in the first six races, including runner-up finishes in Monaco and Montreal. He then scored the all-important win once the series headed to Barcelona.

This win, the 106th of Hamilton's career, only extended his record. He was already the all-time leader in Grand Prix wins, having passed Michael Schumacher (91) during the 2020 season.
Yet this win helped him break a tie with Schumacher to set another record. The two seven-time champions each had six wins at the Catalan circuit, the most in F1 history. Sunday's win marked Hamilton's seventh time standing atop the podium at the circuit, which gave him sole possession of the record.
This win also helped him gain some ground in the battle for the World Drivers' Championship. Antonelli remains the leader, but Hamilton is now only 41 points back.
