Released back in 1991, Point Break starred Reeves as FBI agent Johnny Utah, who infiltrated a gang of surfers. This group, led by Swayze's character Bodhi, spent its free time robbing banks while wearing maks of former United States presidents.
This new television series remains connected to the 1991 film. It will take place in modern day, and it will focus on a new heist crew with ties to the Ex-Presidents gang. The FBI will rely on a former pro surfer with a checkered past to infiltrate the gang.
The first season will feature eight episodes following the FBI investigation into the heist crew. The show will go into production in early 2027.
Dave Kalstein (Treadstone, Quantico, NCIS: Los Angeles) and Christopher C. Rogers (Halt and Catch Fire, Sugar) will be the show-runners and executive producers on the series. AMC Global has not provided details about the script writer.
"Start with one of the most entertaining and unforgettable action films ever made, add a powerhouse creative team and producing partners, massive fan interest that has been clear from the moment we announced the series was in development and you get a greenlight we could not be more excited about," said Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios.
"Dave Kalstein and Chris Rogers have created a story and characters that honor the legacy of the film and will bring a new generation of Ex-Presidents to the world."
This is not the first time that Point Break has returned since 1991. Back in 2015, a reboot film released with Luke Bracey as Utah and Edgar Ramirez as Bodhi. This reboot focused on multiple extreme sports beyond the world of surfing, but it did not enjoy success at the box office or in critical reviews.
