Johnson showed up for the contest in basketball-adjacent attire. He had on Nike basketball shorts, athletic shoes, tall white socks, and a Carvana polo. He even donned a sweatband. Shaq, for comparison, was dressed far more casually.
The former NBA star jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after a missed free throw attempt, but Johnson bounced back to take a 3-2 lead. He then took a 4-3 lead before missing his final two attempts. Shaq capitalized on the opportunity by making two final free throw attempts to seal the 5-4 win.
Never thought my paint scheme would come down to a free-throw contest… but here we are. Going head-to-head with @SHAQ to decide my @Carvana scheme for Daytona. Who you got? pic.twitter.com/cwlGeGkNM2

What is the prize? According to the video, Shaq now has the opportunity to design the No. 84 Carvana Toyota Camry XSE that Johnson will drive as he attempts to qualify for the season-opening Daytona 500. As a side bonus, he will wear a custom Carvana firesuit made just for him.
The contest took part after several days of friendly banter on social media. Shaq started by teasing Johnson about his upcoming attempt to qualify for the Daytona 500. The seven-time NASCAR champion countered by asking about Shaq's jump shot.
This question led to a challenge from the four-time NBA champion. He told Johnson to come find him on the court. The Legacy Motor Club owner-driver accepted and challenged his opponent to a free throw contest.
Now that the contest is complete, fans will wait for the scheme to be revealed. This will take place on Feb. 7.
This crossover is fitting considering Shaq's extensive history with NASCAR. He has taken advantage of multiple crossover opportunities over the decades while serving a variety of roles.
For example, he raced against Dale Earnhardt Jr. for an episode of "Shaq Vs." He also served as the grand marshal alongside Kevin James and Adam Sandler for the 2013 Coke Zero 400 at Daytona.
Shaq's music alter ego, DJ Diesel, performed after Martin Truex Jr. won the 2023 race at Sonoma. He also performed at the 2024 NASCAR Awards Banquet in Charlotte.
