According to a Monday press release, Tyler Allen will take over the team as Chris Gayle moves to Denny Hamlin and the No. 11 team. Allen will continue his meteoric rise in the industry as he follows up a very productive season in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.
The Washington native will now work with Gibbs, who embarks upon his third full-time season in the Cup Series. Allen will try to help Gibbs reach victory lane for the first time in NASCAR's top series.
"It's an honor to be named crew chief for Ty Gibbs and the 54 Team as we head into the 2025 season," Allen said in a statement. "This opportunity has been a dream of mine since starting here at JGR 10 years ago, and I'm thankful for the support and guidance I've received from my mentors, teammates, and everyone along the way.
"Ty has shown a lot of speed and potential the last two years, and I look forward to building on that experience to get the 54 car in victory lane."
Allen is no stranger to the Cup Series. He previously worked as a race engineer under Adam Stevens. He was part of Kyle Busch's No. 18 team from 2017-20, which included a championship in 2019. Allen then moved to Christopher Bell's team in 2021 and remained there through '23.
Allen took on a different role last season. He became the crew chief for one of the Xfinity Series cars, and he guided a variety of drivers during his rookie season.
Allen helped Aric Almirola, Bell, Ryan Truex, and John Hunter Nemechek score a combined eight Xfinity wins. The No. 20 ended the season second in the owner's championship standings under Allen's leadership.
"We take a lot of pride in our Xfinity Series program and the depth of talent that we have been able to maintain," said team owner Joe Gibbs in a statement.
"Tyler Allen was successful at the Cup level with us while working under Adam Stevens and was impressive last season in the Xfinity Series leading that 20 team to eight wins while working with a number of different drivers. We have an exciting young and talented team on the 54 car."
