The NASCAR Cup Series team announced the news on Wednesday as teams prepared to head down to South Florida for the final weekend of the season. Preece will follow in the footsteps of such drivers as Brad Keselowski, Ryan Newman, and Mark Martin as he pursues more wins.
Preece will continue to have his No. 60 crew on the team while moving over to the flagship entry. This includes crew chief Derrick Finley.

"To be trusted with the 6 means more to me than I can put into words," Preece said in a press release. "When you think about what this number means to RFK Racing, you think about Jack Roush, Mark Martin and everything they built together.
"To know this team believes I'm the right person to carry that number into the future is incredibly humbling."
Preece is the sixth driver to control the No. 6 for RFK Racing. Keselowski is the last driver to put the entry in victory lane (Darlington in 2024).
Martin won 35 races with the number between 1988-2006, including two crown jewels in the Southern 500 and Coca-Cola 600. The Hall of Famer won seven races with this number during the 1998 season before finishing second in the championship standings.
Preece is now the next man with a big opportunity to add to the entry's storied legacy. He enters the 2027 season with two wins — the exhibition Clash and the points-paying Daytona summer race. His goal will be to add more while reaching the Chase once again.
"Ryan Preece is a true racer making him the perfect fit for the number 6," said Chip Bowers, president of RFK Racing. "The 6 car is symbolic in our organization and has contributed to some incredible memories in the Cup Series.
"Ryan is not just enthusiastic about the opportunity, but more importantly he's embracing the expectations that come with taking the wheel of an iconic car. More great history is sure to be made with Ryan at the helm."
The No. 60 will remain in the team's lineup for 2027. It will become an Open entry, meaning that it does not have a guaranteed spot in every single race like the No. 17 and No. 6. RFK Racing will provide more details about the No. 60 entry at a later date.
