Brandon Jones shows Kansas mastery with playoff win

Brandon Jones showed once again why he is the driver to watch when the Xfinity Series heads to Kansas Speedway. He scored his third career win at the 1.5-mile track and punched his ticket to the Round of 8.

Jones, who reunited with Joe Gibbs Racing this season, delivered a complete Saturday. He won the pole for the third time at Kansas and then racked up 18 stage points. He then used his long-run speed to lead 54 laps, including the final 38.

Jones crossed the finish line 2.787 seconds ahead of Connor Zilisch, who set a NASCAR record by posting his 16th consecutive top-five finish. Zilisch broke the record held by Sam Ard for 41 years.

The rest of the top 10 included Austin Hill (playoffs), Sammy Smith (playoffs), Sheldon Creed (playoffs), Taylor Gray (playoffs), Jesse Love (playoffs), Nick Sanchez (playoffs), Brenden Queen, and Dean Thompson.

Allgaier and Zilisch both punched their tickets to the Round of 8 by accruing enough points. They can now look beyond next weekend's elimination race at the Charlotte Roval.

"That was exactly like how we needed that to go down," Jones told CW Sports after heading to victory lane. "Those huge two second-place stages — first would have been nicer, but I'm not going to get greedy with that. Two really solid stages, and I mean, just no mistakes. Entire day was so well executed.

"That's probably by far in my career my most well-executed race to date. So I'm so proud of these guys. We worked so hard the entire week to get here and to put races like this together. I was so happy that it went green."

This win marks the second time in Jones's career that he has won multiple races in a single season. He won three races during the 2020 season before ending the year sixth in the championship standings.

Now that he has a secure spot in the Round of 8, he can look forward to another crucial race. If he wins at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the last 1.5-mile track on the schedule, he will reach the Championship 4 for the first time in his Xfinity Series career.

"I mean, we've always been a contender at Vegas," Jones added. "We haven't been able to get that done just yet there, but we've always been so fast at that racetrack.

"So I feel like with this momentum we have here this weekend, really, you know, peaking at the right time with these race cars is crucial. So I'm excited for that one."
