According to a press release, AMC Global Media announced on April 29 that it has greenlit the scripted drama series. Thunder Road will go into production this summer with a set release date sometime in 2027. It will air on AMC and the AMC+ service.
Quaid will star as "The Wrecking Ball" Duane Whitlock, a man who " built a racing empire from a legacy of moonshine runs and dirt tracks and refuses to let it die." According to AMC, ruthless competitors "will stop at nothing" while trying to destroy the Whitlock dynasty.
"We are thrilled to team up with NASCAR, a world class partner that continues to engage and entertain their deeply loyal fans for nearly 80 years," said Dan McDermott, Chief Content Officer of AMC Global Media and President of AMC Studios.
"And in the ultimate dream casting, we're fortunate to have the legendary Dennis Quaid lead this captivating series. This show will be a nonstop thrill ride for viewers."
AMC has not provided any further details about the surrounding cast for the series, which features Taylor Elmore (Justified, Tulsa King) as showrunner/executive producer and John Fusco (The Highwaymen, Young Guns) as creator/executive producer.
These further casting details will likely become available in the coming months as the show ramps up production.
Other executive producers include Cliff Roberts (Untamed), Mark L. Smith (Untamed, The Revenant, American Primeval), as well as NASCAR Studio's Tim Clark and John Dahl (The Last Dance). Gladys Cheng joins as a producer.
Thunder Road is not the only series being developed in the world of NASCAR. According to Deadline, Amazon and Joe Pokaski (Daredevil, Heroes, Underground) are currently developing another drama series focused on stock car racing. This series, Godspeed, focuses on the fictional Parrish Motorsports.
This team is "the last family-owned team in Stock Car Racing with ties to the original bootleggers. When their owner and driver are killed in a crash, the owner's widow, Virginia, must rally her fractured family to save the team, protect their legacy, and chase a championship."
This series from Amazon has not yet been picked up. It is currently early in the process as the writers room comes together.
