The wildly popular auction site Bring a Trailer hosted the former race car last month. According to the listing, this No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet raced during the 2011 season. It finished second in the Brickyard 400, sixth at Michigan, and 24th at Chicagoland.

The former Cup Series car features the famous DuPont flame scheme. The door numbers are the neon yellow, which Hendrick Motorsports will bring back for the 2027 season and beyond.

The car, which featured the road course configuration, sold at auction in Reno, Nevada. However, the listing notes that Rick Ware Racing spent two years rebuilding the car before the now-former owner acquired it.

The race car features a Hendrick Motorsports 358ci SB-2 V8 mated to a four-speed manual transmission. It has 15-inch Aero wheels, Brembo disc brakes, a 9-inch rear axle, and Penske Racing shocks.

It has a roll cage and a racing seat for driver safety. The car also features an Impact Racing safety harness, the mandatory window net, and a Safecraft fire-suppression system.

The stock car previously had the raised rear wing, which NASCAR introduced during the Car of Tomorrow era. However, the seller put on the wicker-style wing that racing fans preferred.

"#678—the car's chassis number—is applied on the right of the dashboard," the listing stated. "The car does not have a traditional VIN, nor a title, and is not legal for road use."

The 2011 season featured Gordon delivering more wins to Hendrick Motorsports and competing in the Chase. He scored wins at Phoenix Raceway, Pocono Raceway, and Atlanta Motor Speedway before ultimately finishing eighth in the championship standings.

The Chase battle that season came down to two drivers — Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart — and an unexpected comeback. Edwards had the championship lead for the majority of the season while Stewart barely made the Chase cut.

However, the veteran driver won five of the final 10 races of the season. This put him and Edwards into a tie. Stewart won the championship by the tiebreaker.
