'Great opportunity' awaits Toyota, Legacy MC in Japan

The NASCAR Cup Series season is complete, but that doesn't mean that Legacy Motor Club is done heading to the race track. Two of the team members will head to Japan this week for a unique event.

According to a previous announcement, six stock cars will hit the track at Fuji Speedway on Sunday, Nov. 16, for a demonstration. This event, which is part of the Super Taikyu Series season, will feature two Cup Series cars, a 24 Hours of Le Mans entry, and three ARCA Menards Series cars.

Seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson will control the Garage 56 entry that he previously shared with Mike Rockenfeller and Jenson Button during the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023. John Hunter Nemechek will drive his No. 42 Toyota Camry XSE while Kamui Kobayashi will drive the No. 67 Toyota Camry XSE for 23XI Racing.

Takuma Koga will drive the No. 12 Toyota Camry from the ARCA Menards Series. Toyota factory drivers Toshiki Oyu and Kazuto Kotaka will drive the No. 52 Chevrolet SS and No. 9 Ford Mustang, respectively.

"It's a great opportunity for Toyota to be able to go over there and showcase what we do on the NASCAR forefront," Nemechek told FanBuzz before heading to Japan. "Being able to do it in front of a Japan crowd is going to be really neat. So I'm super excited to get over there and go have some fun."

Nemechek didn't have all of the details about how this deal came about to hit the track 6,915 miles from where he calls home. This became less important considering that he faced these questions before the season finale at Phoenix Raceway.

What Nemechek knew is that he would quickly head overseas after the Cup Series season ended, so that he and the other drivers could jump right into the action.

"This initiative introduces the appeal of American-made vehicles, previously absent from the Super Taikyu Series, in order to increase spectators and attract new teams," said the Super Taikyu Mirai Organization (STMO) in a press release.

"Furthermore, the participation of American brands will enhance our outreach capabilities both domestically and internationally, promoting the spread of international endurance racing culture. Through the Super Taikyu Series, we will also contribute to deepening the collaboration between the Japanese and American automotive industries."
