It's no secret that Shane van Gisbergen (SVG) has already made the move to racing NASCAR. He's set to make starts across all three of the top national series in 2024 in a developmental contract with Trackhouse Racing.
However, he already looks to have a goal in mind for 2025. The inaugural Chicago Street Course race winner is finishing up one final Australian Supercars race before he comes to the States.
The 34-year-old from New Zealand will be getting plenty of oval racing done in 2024, as he will make starts in the Truck Series, Xfinity, and Cup. It also appears he will also get some starts behind the wheel of a late model as well.
SVG recently spoke with Speedcafe about his NASCAR aspirations.
"It sounds like I'm going to be doing a lot of races (next year)," van Gisbergen said. "When they said that it's a part-time schedule - maybe 20 races, you know it's more than what we do here full-time. I want to get as much experience as I can and hopefully be in the Cup Series (full-time) in '25."
The three-time Supercars champion has one more shot at a fourth in the season finale in Adelaide this month. He's in a tough battle with Brodie Kostecki who is trying his hands in the NASCAR world as well.
That makes for an interesting story for both drivers, especially with whoever wins this season's Supercars championship.
Their rivalry there could easily carry over into NASCAR, and that will only make following both drivers' adventures into NASCAR that much more exciting.
SVG has already proven he can win in NASCAR on a road course, so we will have to wait and see if he can develop his oval driving.
One thing is for sure, if he believes he will be a full-time Cup driver by 2025, don't count him out.
