Sheldon Creed Leaving Richard Childress Racing

Sheldon Creed has seen the highs and lows of NASCAR racing, which included a Truck Series Championship in 2020. However, the driver of the No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet in the Xfinity Series for Richard Childress Racing will be looking for a new ride for 2024 and beyond.

Richard Childress Racing made the shocking announcement after two full-time seasons for Creed, including a playoff berth this season.

In a statement posted on X, RCR officially announced they are moving on from Creed, with the next driver of the No. 2 car to be announced at a later date.

"Sheldon Creed will not be returning as driver of the No. 2 Whelen Camaro in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2024," RCR said. "We will make an announcement regarding the driver of the No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet in the near future."

Creed has had a strong 2023 campaign, even though he has yet to find a victory thus far in his Xfinity career. He has finished runner-up three times this year and had two third place finishes as well.

Creed hasn't let his lame duck driver status bother him as he is still in the championship hunt. In fact, Creed might already have another ride lined-up, according to a post on his X feed.

"We have decided to leave Richard Childress Racing at the end of the 2023 Xfinity Series season," Creed said. "RCR and Whelen gave me my first opportunity out of the truck series, and although we haven't gone out and won all the races we would've wished to, I'll be forever grateful for the friendships, hard work, learning, and growing we have done. Additionally, I can't thank Whelen enough for their never-ending support of me and our team. Extremely excited to share my 2024 plans with you all soon."

It seems that RCR and Creed have different stories about how this change in direction went down, which is typical whenever there has been a driver change in NASCAR of late.

The biggest questions that remain are who will take Creed's seat and where will Creed end up racing next season. There has been a lot of movement among teams in the series, with a majority of the top rides having already been filled. It seems odd for Creed to want to leave such a great opportunity like the one he has had with RCR. Did RCR make the decision or does Creed have an even more amazing opportunity ahead of him? It will be interesting to see what time reveals.
