Authorities confirmed that a fan died after falling from an upper level at Estadio Banorte before the Mexico vs. Portugal friendly. According to initial reports, the individual fell from a VIP box area into the stadium's parking zone.
The match still went on.
Inside the stadium, many fans had little to no idea anything had happened. The game ended in a 0-0 draw, but the focus quickly shifted afterward.
Officials are now investigating.
The Mexico City Public Prosecutor's Office said the area was secured immediately, with forensic teams collecting evidence and reviewing surveillance footage. Witness statements are also being gathered as authorities work to piece together exactly what led to the fall.
A post-mortem is underway to determine the official cause of death.
The Mexican Football Federation issued a statement expressing condolences and emphasized that fan safety remains a top priority. FIFA president Gianni Infantino also reacted, saying the organization was "deeply saddened" by the incident.

The timing adds another layer.
The stadium had just reopened following renovations ahead of this summer's World Cup, where it's set to host multiple matches, including the opener.
Now, instead of celebration, there are questions about what happened and how it can be prevented moving forward.
