The two shared the news with a joint statement on social media on Friday. They did not provide many details about the split but said that they will create six more episodes of their podcast as a farewell.
"There really is no smooth or easy way to share this news," Rapinoe and Bird said. "After a lot of thought, we've made the decision to separate as a couple.
"This hasn't been an easy decision, but it's one we've made together, with so much love, respect, and care for each other. We've shared a whole life over the last decade, through big moments and in quiet ones, and that is something we'll always carry with us.
"We are so grateful to this incredible community that has held us up, welcomed us in, and supported us exactly as we are. So many of you have reminded us, again and again, why loving out loud matters.
"Getting to create A Touch More: The Podcast and build a network around it has been a tremendous joy. The conversations, the laughter, the connection - it means more than we can put into words. While this chapter of doing the podcast together is ending, what we've built with you isn't.
"Thank you for being with us through all of it...it means the world to us."
Rapinoe is a three-time member of the Women's World Cup team (2011, 2015, 2019). She celebrated wins in both 2011 and 2019. She also won a gold medal for the United States during the 2012 Olympics. The United States defeated Japan 2-1.
Bird is a member of the WNBA Hall of Fame. She won four championships during her 21-year career, which she spent entirely with Seattle. She earned All-Star honors 13 times. Bird also won five Olympic gold medals during her career.
The couple first met during a photoshoot for the 2016 Rio Olympics. They went public in 2017 when Bird announced that they were dating. They then announced their engagement in 2020 with a photo of Rapinoe down on one knee. Six years later, they broke off the engagement.
