The good news? He's home, and doctors expect a full recovery.

Elliott shared the update in a message that hit a lot deeper than just a typical injury report.

"Just wanted to come on here to share an update," he wrote on social media. "Unfortunately I have spent the majority of the last week in the hospital battling sepsis, an infection that spread to my blood. I'm happy to report I'm now home with my wife and daughter, recovering and thankful to be reunited.

"My doctors have called this 'a perfect storm' of circumstances, and a lot of bad luck, but they are confident I will make a speedy and full recovery. This has been an incredibly difficult experience for my family and I, and a reminder that there is nothing more important than health.

"Sepsis can happen to even the healthiest of individuals, and it's very important to listen to your body. I am grateful to have caught it early and to have received excellent care from my team of doctors and nurses.

"Also for the immense help and support from family who happened to be visiting while all of this was happening. To my teammates, get it done this weekend boys and I'll be back in no time. Vamos."

That last part says a lot. Even after a scare like that, the soccer star was already looking forward to getting back out there.
