According to local officials, the incident occurred in Gotemba, Shizuoka Prefecture, where elementary school teams were participating in a tournament.
Police said the tree, estimated to be about 20 meters (roughly 66 feet) tall, fell onto an area where parents and children had gathered to watch the matches.
Two preschool-aged girls suffered minor injuries, while five women in their 30s and 40s were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Authorities said none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
Emergency responders were called to the scene shortly after noon, with multiple ambulances dispatched and one injured person transported by medical helicopter, according to reports.
Witnesses said they heard a loud cracking sound moments before the tree collapsed, sending spectators scrambling for safety.
Officials have not said what caused the tree to fall. Rain moved through the area the previous night, though no rainfall was reported in Gotemba on Sunday.
The soccer tournament was being held at a sports ground within a resort complex that also includes a hotel, hot spring facilities and tennis courts.
