U.S. Soccer Superstar Alex Morgan Announces Retirement And Pregnancy

Alex Morgan, one of the most popular U.S. women's soccer players ever to lace up the cleats, has just announced that she is retiring after playing 15 seasons (2010-2024).

"I gave everything to this sport, and what I got in return was more than I could ever dream of," Morgan stated on Instagram. "Success for me is defined by never giving up and giving your all, and I did just that. I'm giving my all every single day on the field, and I did that."

Notably, Morgan was the captain of the U.S. women's team, and was a main contributor in two World Cup victories (2015, 2019) along with helping America win an Olympic gold medal in 2012.

In view of her storied career, she had 224 international appearances, scoring a total of 123 goals and contributing 53 assists. To mention, Morgan was twice named U.S. Soccer's Female Athlete of the Year (2012, 2018), in addition to being a three-time finalist for FIFA World Player of the Year (2012, 2019, 2022).

Furthermore, along with this, Morgan announced that she is pregnant. That is to say, at 35 years old she originally planned to retire at the end of the season, but now that she is expecting her second child, the decision was made early.

"And as unexpected as this came, we are so overjoyed," Morgan said. "To me, family means everything, I wouldn't be here without my husband and my family, uplifting and motivating and encouraging and supporting me and sacrificing for me, for the last 15 years as a professional athlete."

To point out, Morgan will be lacing up the cleats one last time as she will play her final game vs. the North Carolina Courage on Sunday, September 8 at 8:00 pm ET.

"I just want to thank the fans for always supporting us," she said. "Being there, showing up day in and day out. Supporting not only the teams that I've played on, but the player and the human that I am as well."
