According to OutKick, the former NFL MVP is among the on-air personalities being let go as ESPN continues its latest round of layoffs. The report comes a day after Ryan Clark was also said to be among those departing the network.
Newton joined ESPN two years ago and quickly became a regular face on First Take, frequently debating Stephen A. Smith on the network's signature morning show.
Last football season, ESPN expanded Newton's role by making him Smith's primary co-host on Mondays, traditionally the highest-rated edition of First Take each week during the NFL season.
Per OutKick, ESPN is expected to search for a permanent replacement on those Monday shows.
Newton's departure comes just months after he and Smith publicly disagreed over an appearance by Jason Whitlock on Newton's podcast.
Smith took issue with Newton not pushing back on Whitlock's criticism of his 2023 memoir. Newton later responded that he didn't believe there was "nothing to correct" during the conversation.
While the two eventually moved on, the disagreement generated plenty of headlines during the offseason.
Now, Newton appears to be the latest recognizable name leaving ESPN as the network continues making significant staffing changes in the wake of its NFL Network acquisition.
