The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson dropped Friday, telling the story of the 25-year-old cycling star whose 2022 murder shocked the sports world. Directed by Emmy winner Marina Zenovich, the film focuses less on headlines and more on who Wilson actually was. It's currently ranked as the most-watched film on Netflix.
Wilson wasn't just a rising cyclist. She was one of the top gravel racers in the country, a Dartmouth graduate, and someone widely known for her drive and personality off the bike. Friends and family describe her as intentional, grounded, and focused on building community through the sport.
The documentary leans into that. It also doesn't ignore what happened.
Wilson was shot and killed in Austin while preparing for a race she was favored to win. Investigators later tied the crime to Kaitlin Armstrong, who fled the country before being captured after a 43-day manhunt. She was convicted in 2023 and sentenced to 90 years.
That part of the story is there, but it's not the whole story.
The documentary uses personal journals, home videos, and interviews to shift the focus back to Wilson's life, not just her death. Her family was involved in the process and pushed for exactly that.
More about who she was. Less about how it ended.
That's what makes this one different. It's not just true crime. It's a reminder of what was lost.
