Panettiere died Sunday at her home in South Carolina, her representative confirmed to ABC News.
Her official cause of death has not been determined.
According to 911 dispatch audio obtained by Page Six, emergency personnel responded to a reported "overdose" and found Panettiere in cardiac arrest. TMZ reported that Narcan was found at the residence, though authorities have said there were no apparent signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
An investigation remains ongoing.
"It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden," her father, Skip Panettiere, said in a statement. "She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her."
Panettiere began acting as a child and was only 10 when she appeared alongside Denzel Washington in 2000's "Remember the Titans."
She played Sheryl Yoast, the football-obsessed daughter of assistant coach Bill Yoast, played by Will Patton. The movie became a sports classic and remains one of Panettiere's most recognizable early roles.
Her career later included starring roles in "Heroes" and "Nashville," along with appearances in "Ice Princess" and the "Scream" franchise.
Panettiere also had a significant connection to the sports world away from Hollywood.
She shared an 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, with former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko. The couple were previously engaged.
Panettiere would have turned 37 on Friday.
She is survived by her daughter and parents.
