Tom Cruise's 'All the Right Moves' Co-Star Has Died: Charles Cioffi Was 90

Charles Cioffi, a veteran character actor known for playing Tom Cruise's father in the 1983 football drama All the Right Moves and for numerous television and Broadway roles, has died at the age of 90.

Cioffi died May 22 of natural causes at his home in Marina del Rey, California, according to reports citing his family.

Born in New York City on Oct. 31, 1935, Cioffi launched his acting career on stage in the early 1960s with the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis before eventually making his Broadway debut in a 1968 production of King Lear starring Lee J. Cobb.

Over the years, he appeared in seven Broadway productions, including the original 1969 run of 1776, a 1975 production of Hamlet featuring Sam Waterston and Jane Alexander, and the 1992 play Chinese Coffee alongside Al Pacino.

Cioffi became a familiar face on television throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, appearing in series such as Kojak, Taxi, Wonder Woman, Little House on the Prairie, Hawaii Five-0, The X-Files, Law & Order and The Practice.

His film career included roles in Shaft (1971), Klute (1971), Time After Time (1979), Missing (1982) and Newsies (1992).

In All the Right Moves, Cioffi portrayed the father of Cruise's character, a standout role in the sports drama centered on high school football and life in a struggling Pennsylvania steel town.

He also earned recognition for his role in the thriller Klute, starring Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland, in which he portrayed a corporate executive later revealed to be the film's killer.

Cioffi is survived by his wife, Anne, two sons and extended family members.
