Aaron Hernandez's lawyer wanted a blockbuster witness to testify and no one knows why he didn't show

Hernandez's defense team is trying to figure out what happened.

On the day the defense rested in the Aaron Hernandez murder trial, his lawyer, Jose Baez, said he had subpoenaed a high profile witness .. but he wasn't in court Wednesday.

WBZ-TV in Boston reported a witness list from February had the New England Patriots head coach on it, and it's unclear whether he'll be compelled to make a court appearance.

Baez told WBZ-TV that Belichick has been served the subpoena within the las two days, and he didn't know whether he responded through an attorney.

Hernandez, 27, is on trial and charged with killing two men, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, in a drive-by shooting following an incident a Boston nightclub in 2012.  Prosecutors say Hernandez was angered when he spilled his drink after de Abreu bumped into him, and he later shot the two men as they were in their car, at a stoplight.

Hernandez, the former New England Patriots and Florida Gators star,  is already serving a life sentence for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd,

Closing arguments are set to start at 9 a.m. Thursday.
