Bowden was discussing his former players on the show, and how several of the players that he coached in his career grew up without a prominent male figure in their life. While Bowden praised the women in the lives of these players, some of the comments he made caused a firestorm on social media.

But where's the man? A boy needs a male figure, and the girls do, too. Somebody to discipline them and make them be a man. You know, I used to kid about this: they grew up wanting to be like their momma. They want to be a man like their momma because that's the way they were raised. That's why they wear earrings.

Bowden then suggested that some of his comments were in jest, but social media wasn't having it.

Bowden, 87, coached at Florida State from 1976 until 2009. He won over 300 games in his tenure with the school, and is largely responsible for turning the Seminoles into a national powerhouse.
