Leaving ESPN hasn't been quite the remedy for all the talents that have recently left the network.

In was announced by HBO on Friday that they would be cancelling the show Any Given Wednesday after just 17 episodes. The show had been spear-headed by former ESPN writer and TV personality Bill Simmons, whose firing was highly publicized last year.
From a joint-statement:
"Any Given Wednesday, the weekly HBO talk show hosted by Bill Simmons, will finish its run on Wednesday, Nov. 9 and will not return to the net work next season.
"The decision was mutually agreed upon by HBO and Simmons, who joined the network in July of 2015. IN the past year, Simmons has created the Bill Simmons Media Group, which is responsible for a wide range of linear and digital initiatives including the debut of The Ringer website, developing new content and assets, and re-launching the leading podcast franchise in the sports industry.

It appears that the cause behind the cancelling is the ratings for the show. While they had started off well, Awful Announcing shows that the numbers for the two shows prior to this week had done extremely poorly. You can probably assume that the show had a similar ratings performance this week to cause the cancellation.
HBO said in their statement that they are still committed to Simmons with his other projects going forward, which include his podcast and his website "The Ringer".
