Leavitt coached at South Florida from 1997 to 2009 before he was fired. Leavitt later coached with Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco before joining Colorado as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach last season.
Oregon needed to make a big splash in order to improve their defense, and Leavitt definitely qualifies as that. Colorado was eighth in yards per play this year on defense, while Oregon was on the opposite end of the spectrum; the Ducks ranked 115th in the same metric, giving up over six yards per play.
