Report: There are 'whispers' of an SEC coach bolting for the Oregon job

This would be huge.

Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich is likely to be fired when he meets with the Oregon brass on Wednesday. Why they're waiting so long to pull the trigger is beyond anyone's knowledge considering the Ducks already played their last game of the season against Oregon State on Saturday.

However, it looks like the coaching search could be under way and there might be one big name coach that's surprisingly interested. Florida's Jim McElwain is a name that has popped up and while it doesn't make sense upon first hearing, it does more when you think about.

This is what Dan Wolken of USA Today is hearing:

There also are whispers that Florida's Jim McElwain could be intrigued by the opportunity to return to the Pacific Northwest, close to where he went to college and started his coaching career at Eastern Washington. Despite winning SEC East titles in his first two years, McElwain has been a bit under-appreciated by the Florida fan base and just got a new athletics director in Gainesville.

This could be a ploy by McElwain to get a pay raise since he's the sixth-highest paid coach in the SEC right now and he's the only one to have made it to the SEC Championship in each of his first two seasons at Florida. Helfrich hasn't been fired yet so this may mean nothing in the end if Oregon decides to keep him anyway.
