Tennessee hired John Currie as their new athletic director on Tuesday, but it looks like a lot of controversy is now surrounding that decision.

Former Volunteer head coach Phillip Fulmer was a candidate for the job, and many believed he was the favorite before Currie was announced as the new AD. Interestingly enough, WNML's Jimmy Hyams is now reporting that Fulmer was led to believe that the job was his as recently as Monday.
We were told that Fulmer got a call from a search committee member Monday morning leading Fulmer to believe he had the job.
We were told [UT Chancellor Beverly] Davenport didn't want Fulmer because he didn't have AD experience and she wanted someone with experience from a Power 5 Conference.

Hyams reports that the decision behind naming Currie the new athletic director was not unanimous, and if this report is true, then Fulmer likely had serious support from some members on the committee. It's unclear how close it was, but the Currie hiring was seen as a move out of left field compared to what many thought was almost a done deal for Fulmer just two weeks ago.
