WWE superstar, former champion sidelined after significant injury

This is extremely unfortunate.

Shelton Benjamin was one of the most anticipated returns for WWE after they split their RAW and SmackDown brands into separate shows. Benjamin — a former Intercontinental Champion — was one of the best high-flying wrestlers in WWE history and there was genuine excitement surrounding his return.

Well, either that return will be pushed back a long ways or it won't happen at all, as Benjamin announced on Sunday morning that he has suffered a major shoulder injury, which will require surgery.

Benjamin's return to the company had been announced on an episode of SmackDown Live just a few weeks ago. He had been gone from WWE for over six years before his return was announced.

Benjamin wrestled at the collegiate level with the University of Minnesota before he joined WWE. He debuted on television in 2002, where he quickly gained acclaim for his elite athleticism and high-flying, high-risk moves. Benjamin won the Intercontinental, U.S., and tag team championships before he was released in 2010.

Hopefully Benjamin is able to recover, as he would be a valued asset to WWE television right now.
