The 71-year-old announced that doctors discovered the recurrence after an abnormal CT scan led to exploratory surgery earlier this week.
"I have always believed in being open and honest about my health journey," Evert wrote in a statement shared on social media. "This past weekend, after undergoing CT and PET scans, I learned that my ovarian cancer has returned."
Evert said she has already undergone surgery and will begin chemotherapy in the coming weeks. As a result, she will miss this year's Wimbledon and step away from her broadcasting and other professional commitments while focusing on treatment.
"Ovarian cancer is relentless, but I will stay optimistic and determined in continuing to fight this battle," she wrote. "I am deeply grateful to my medical team, my family, friends and everyone who has reached out with kindness and encouragement."
Fellow tennis great Martina Navratilova quickly offered her support.
"My friend Chrissie is a champion of champions and as such she will slay this monster again," Navratilova wrote on Instagram. "We are all pulling for you."
Evert was first diagnosed with Stage 1 ovarian cancer in 2021 after her sister died from the disease. She announced she was in remission in early 2023 before revealing later that year that the cancer had returned. She has frequently used her platform to encourage others to learn their family medical history and prioritize early detection.
A three-time Wimbledon singles champion and one of the greatest players in tennis history, Evert said she hopes to return after completing treatment.
"I look forward to seeing everyone again soon," she wrote.
