Tennis star Alexander Zverev has settled a domestic abuse case after reaching an out-of-court agreement with his former partner, who had accused him of assault. The case is now closed, as far as German courts are concerned.
Per the Associated Press:
"A district court in Berlin ended the trial on Friday with the agreement of state prosecutors and lawyers for Zverev and his former partner Brenda Patea, German news agency dpa reported.
"Zverev agreed to pay fines of 150,000 euros ($162,000) to the state and 50,000 euros ($54,000) to charitable organizations."
Zverev is ranked as the No. 4 player in the world and remained alive in the French Open. He was facing a charge of causing bodily harm to Patea as the result of an argument in Berlin in May 2020. Prosecutors accused him of pushing her against a wall and choking her. Zverev denied any wrongdoing.
The case went to trial after Zverev contested a penalty order last October, including a requirement for him to pay fines amounting to 450,000 euros ($490,000). Penalty orders are used in Germany as a means of resolving some criminal cases while avoiding a trial if the suspect doesn't contest the order.
As the AP relayed, judge Barbara Lüders informed the court on Tuesday that she was dropping the legal case involving tennis star Alexander Zverev and his former partner Brenda Patea. Lüders revealed that attorneys for both parties engaged in discussions in recent days aimed at resolving their longstanding disputes.
According to Lüders, Zverev and Patea expressed a mutual desire to put an end to their public feud and focus on moving forward, especially concerning their joint custody of their child. Zverev had previously expressed confidence in the German legal system, asserting his belief in being vindicated.
