According to Sanger police, officers responded to a crash shortly before 10:30 p.m. on May 28 along FM 455 near Lake Crest Drive. Musgrave was one of two people killed in the incident, per KSAT.
Authorities said a third person was hospitalized and later released. Additional details about the crash, including whether other vehicles were involved, have not been released.
Musgrave, a native of Sanger, Texas, joined the University of the Incarnate Word earlier this year. He was a graduate of Sanger High School and a member of the Cardinals' track and field program.
The university honored Musgrave during a special memorial service Tuesday.
"The University of the Incarnate Word community is stunned and saddened by the sudden loss of Sam Musgrave," a university spokesperson said in a statement. "Sam was a cherished member of our UIW community and a beloved athlete on our track and field team."
School officials said Musgrave began his studies at UIW in January and quickly became a valued member of the campus community.
The Sanger Independent School District also acknowledged the tragedy, noting that a recent graduate of its cross-country program was killed in a serious vehicle accident. The district said two other Sanger High School cross-country student-athletes were hospitalized.
The crash remains under investigation.
