College football player in hot water after authorities say he violated a drunk teammate

This type of assault is unusual, an expert says.

A college football linebacker is due in court next month after authorities say he sexually assaulted a drunk teammate.

Lawrence D. Gaines, a linebacker at Carthage College, has an April 2 court date in a Wisconsin court on a charge of second degree sexual assault of an intoxicated victim, according to the Circuit Court database.

The Kenosha News reported that the charge stems from an incident last year in which authorities say Gaines, 19, of Merrillville, Ind., sexually assaulted his teammate.

An 18-year-old told Kenosha police he and Gaines went to a party together. The complainant told police he got drunk and passed out in Gaines' dorm room, and when he woke, his pants were off. The complainant told authorities Gaines was fondling his genitals and performing oral sex on him.

Gaines is no longer listed on the Carthage College football roster. He's free after posting a $2,500 bond, but faces up to a $100,000 fine and 25 years in prison if convicted, the News reported.
