Photos started circulating Friday showing thick, dark smoke near the home of the New York Jets and New York Giants, and yeah, at first glance, it looked bad. Especially with the stadium set to host major events, including matches tied to the 2026 World Cup.
But here's what's actually going on.
The smoke is coming from a warehouse fire in nearby Carlstadt, New Jersey, roughly three miles away. According to local reports, the blaze broke out on Washington Avenue and quickly sent large plumes of smoke into the sky. Visible from miles away. Even Manhattan.
Naturally, social media did its thing.
Rumors spread. People assumed the worst. And suddenly MetLife was trending for all the wrong reasons.
🚨JUST IN: The #Jets & #Giants MetLife Stadium appears to be on fire, according to videos showing a massive amount of smoke nearby.
There are conflicting reports about whether the fire is actually at the stadium or from a nearby fire in Carlstadt.

Reality check. The fire never reached the stadium. No damage reported there. And authorities say the situation in Carlstadt is under control, with no injuries.
So yeah, scary visuals. Totally understandable reaction.
But the bottom line is simple. The stadium is fine. The smoke just made it look a lot closer than it actually was.
