Connecticut Sun center Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle, ending a marriage that endured one of the most public and dramatic chapters in recent sports history.

According to court records filed Thursday in Fulton County, Georgia, Griner cited the marriage as "irretrievably broken" and listed July 24 as the date of separation. The couple married in June 2018 after meeting as students at Baylor.
Griner, 35, is seeking joint legal custody of the couple's 2-year-old son, Bash, according to multiple reports.

Brittney Griner was arrested after Russian authorities said they found vape cartridges containing hash oil in her luggage at a Moscow airport. She was convicted on drug charges and sentenced to nine years in prison before being released in December 2022 as part of a prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia.
The couple frequently appeared together following Griner's return to the United States, including during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Griner helped Team USA capture another gold medal.
