New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart's wife, Marta Xargay Casademont, went into NYPD's 78th Precinct in Brooklyn on Thursday to report that as a couple they have received death threats.
That is to say, the wife of the WNBA star says she received hateful messages from an anonymous sender, in which one of them read, "I hope someone shoots your wife dead... f*** you d****, I hope you both die."
Evidently, in view of the context revolving around the contents, this was directed as a homophobic email.
The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force has also been notified, as this investigation is ongoing.
Stewart's partner Casademont, 33, is a former pro basketball player from Spain that retired in 2021, the same year in which the couple got married.
As the first overall pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft, Stewart has had a stellar career that includes being a 2x MVP (2018, 2023) and 2x Finals MVP (2018, 2020).
The 30-year-old star is attempting to win her third WNBA championship, as she and the Liberty are currently in the WNBA Finals, tied 1-1 with the Minnesota Lynx.
Notably, Stewart has averaged 20.4 points (45.8% FG; 29.5% 3PT), 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.3 blocks this season.
In regards to the threats made against Casademont and Stewart, the NYPD is in communication with NBA security, which has received other threatening emails from the same sender's address (per ABC7).
To point out, this is not the only case, as Connecticut Sun star player DiJonai Carrington had previously received emails that were filled with racist slurs.
As a response to this, the WNBA said they would not tolerate "racist, derogatory, or threatening comments made about players, teams, and anyone affiliated with the league."
