Russell Wilson has an interesting idea to avoid ties in the NFL

Games in the NFL should never end in ties, but Monday night's game between the Seahawks and Cardinals showed us exactly why they sometimes do

Monday night's 6-6 tie between the Seahawks and the Cardinals was as frustrating for a lot of fans as it was for the players.

It doesn't happen much, but when it does, it just doesn't seem right. You'd think in the rule-happy board rooms of the NFL's offices, someone would be able to draw up something to prohibit ties from ever happening.

Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson thinks so and he's got an idea for preventing them—-albeit a silly one.

"Let's say we're the away team. We win the coin toss, we get the ball on the 35-yard line going in," Wilson suggested. "You kick one field goal. You can't do anything else but a field goal. You make the field goal, the game's over. If you miss the field goal, the game's over and the other team wins."

Wilson argues that a game ending in a tie is kind of unfair.

"I just think that if you play that long, you're putting your lives on the line," he said. "You should find a way to win. I don't like ending in a tie."

Implausible? Absolutely. But at least he's trying to inspire change. The real issue, however, is how many chances each team had to win the game fair and square. Cardinals kicker Chandler Cantanzaro missed a 24-yard field goal in overtime that would have ended the game. And Seahawks kickerStephen Hauschka missed an equally ridiculous 28-yard chip shot with 11 seconds remaining in overtime that would have also ended the game.

So before everyone starts throwing out these silly tie-breaker ideas, games that end in ties usually end up that way because one or both teams played miserably and blew their chances to win. Monday night being a classic example.
