American sportscaster Chris Berman is one of the most popular people in sports media and has been with ESPN since its start in 1979.

Berman is known for his various catchphrases, which helped him become the face of ESPN and one of the world's most-beloved media members.

Also known as "Boomer" and "The Swami" on air, Berman stepped down from some of his many roles with The Worldwide Leader in Sports in 2017, but continues to work for the network in smaller capacities.

Having worked at ESPN for more than 40 years, Berman has built himself quite the fortune, too.

Christopher James Berman's birthplace is Greenwich, Connecticut, but he was primarily raised in Irvington, New York, in a Jewish household.

His mother, Peggy Shevell, was also a journalist and worked for Time Magazine, while his father was a corporate executive vice president.

Berman attended Brown University after graduating from the Hackley School. He worked as the sports director of the school's radio station. and then became the weekend sports anchor for an NBC affiliate, Hartford's WVIT-TV, after college.

Berman joined ESPN just a few months after the network was founded, and helped build it into a powerhouse.

While at ESPN, Berman was a prominent figure on various shows, including work as the studio host for SportsCenter, Sunday NFL Countdown and Monday Night Countdown.

Additionally, Berman did play-by-play commentary for Monday Night Football as well as three Super Bowls for ABC Sports. He has even hosted the NFL Draft.

Berman's sportscasting career was never limited to football, however. He's worked in baseball for nearly his entire time in the industry, too, and was the play-by-play announcer for ESPN's telecast of Cal Ripken's 2,131st consecutive game, which won an Emmy Award.

Boomer has been recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his achievements in sportscasting, and won the National Sportscaster of the Year award six times. He has also won the award of Cable's Best Sports Host by CableACE on multiple occasions.

Personal Life

Chris Berman got married to his wife Katherine Alexinski in 1983. Chris and Kathy have two children together, son Douglas and daughter Meredith.

Unfortunately, Kathy passed away in a tragic car accident in Woodbury, Connecticut in 2017.

In addition to his work as a sportscaster, Berman has featured in various films, often playing a cameo role. He's appeared in notable movies such as The Longest Yard, Grown Ups 2, Kingpin, Eddie, The Program, The Waterboy and Necessary Roughness.
