NFL Hall of Fame Head Coach Tony Dungy Questions VP Kamala Harris’ Faith-Based Tweet On Abortion Rights

Former Indianapolis Colts legendary coach Tony Dungy has responded to Vice President Kamala Harris' tweet about abortion rights, while questioning her faith-based views.

As the 2024 U.S. presidential election is nearing, most of Americans already know where the two main candidates, former President Donald Trump and current VP Harris, stand on major issues.

That is to say, after the presidential debate, Harris has since doubled down and repeated her stance on abortion rights for women in a post she wrote on X Thursday.

"One does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree: The government, and certainly Donald Trump, should not be telling a woman what to do with her body," Harris wrote.

In response to this, Dungy, a strong Christian who has always been open about sharing his faith, wrote out a response that entailed him quoting Biblical Scripture, which seemingly contradicts her views on abortion.

"Dear VP Harris: I hear you make this statement all the time," Dungy wrote in a quote tweet. "Exactly what 'faith' are you talking about when you say you don't have to abandon it to support abortion? Are you talking about the Christian faith that says all babies are made in the image of God (Gen 1:26), that God places them in the womb (Jer 1:5) and that we should not take any life unjustly (Luke 18:20)?

"Are you talking about that faith or some nebulous, general 'faith' that says we're good enough, and smart enough to make our own decisions? What 'faith' are you talking about?"

In view of this issue, both presidential candidates have opposing views, while Harris is considered pro-choice, Trump calls himself pro-life.

With this in mind, Harris has previously made a statement that if Congress were to pass a bill to reinstate the protections of Roe v. Wade, she would be proud to sign it into law, if elected president in November.

On the other hand, when Trump was president, the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which has allowed states to handle the issue of abortion.

Trump at the debate said he does believe in exceptions for abortion.

"I believe in the exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother, I believe strongly in it. Ronald Reagan did also. Eighty-five percent of Republicans knew exceptions are very important."

In view of Dungy's NFL career as a coach, he became the first black coach to win a Super Bowl (XLV), when the Colts defeated the Chicago Bears 29-17 in 2007.

He had a career record of 148-79 and was named Maxwell Club Coach of the year two times, both in 1997 (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and 2005 with the Colts. Notably, in 2016 Dungy was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
