Back in 2023, Vitale first revealed to the world that he had been diagnosed with laryngeal (throat) cancer, and following a surgical procedure, a mass in his neck was removed.

After undergoing 30 rounds of radiation since July 2023, ultimately it all worked out as the 85-year-old presented the good news on Thursday that his PET Scan came back clean of cancer.

Vitale posted on X, "SANTA CLAUS came early as Dr Rick Brown called & said that my PET SCAN at 7 AM came back CLEAN OF CANCER ! OMG thanks so much to ALL of YOU for your [prayers]."

To point out, he has also had to overcome previous diagnoses of melanoma and lymphoma before the most recent ailment.

Many fans reached out, including the Duke men's basketball team who wrote: "Awesome Dickie V!!!! You are a warrior and a true inspiration! Love this."

Vitale is about as well-accomplished as any broadcaster ever, as he has been doing the job for 41 years, and hopefully many more years to come.

That is to say, Vitale has accomplished even more off the court.

The Dickie V Foundation has helped award more than $84 million in pediatric cancer research grants to top scientists in America.

"After losing his friend and fellow ESPN broadcaster Jim Valvano to cancer, Dick Vitale made a commitment to stop the disease. He is a long-time V Foundation Board member and a passionate advocate for childhood cancer research... Dick has often proclaimed he will continue to raise money for kids with cancer 'until his last breath.' He is truly a champion!" (V.org).

Vitale has won multiple awards for both his broadcasting and philanthropic work, such as winning Sportscaster of the Year (1989), Humanitarian Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, Knute Rockne Inspiration Award, Distinguished Citizen Award, as well as being inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame.
