The Eagles somehow face questions about benching Jalen Hurts

Jalen Hurts may be the reigning Super Bowl MVP, but that doesn't mean the Philadelphia Eagles haven't faced questions about his status with the team.

Head coach Nick Sirianni even had to state that he won't be benching his starting quarterback after three straight losses dropped the team to 8-5 on the season.

"No, I think that's ridiculous," Sirianni said during a Wednesday appearance on 94 WIP in Philadelphia, per ESPN. "I know every time I go out on that field with Jalen Hurts as our quarterback, we have a chance to win the game.

"That's something that's been proven. We've won a lot of football games. This is the most ultimate team game. You win together as a team, you lose together as a team. It's never just one thing."

The Eagles started the season winning their first four games. This included defeating the Rams, one of the top two seeds in the NFC. However, the Eagles suffered their first loss of the season against the Broncos on Oct. 5. Four days later, they lost to the rival Giants.

This two-game losing streak appeared to be a relatively minor issue for the Eagles, especially as they rebounded by defeating the Vikings, Giants, Packers, and Lions to reach 8-2 on the season. Yes, the offense had some signs of inconsistency, but the path to the playoffs appeared clear.

The situation drastically changed on Nov. 23. The Eagles lost a shootout to the Cowboys. They then lost to the Bears five days later.

Most recently, they lost to the Chargers in a game in which Hurts had five turnovers. This included an interception in overtime that proved to be the difference.

This game certainly fell short of the team's expectations, especially as the offense has struggled overall. The Eagles are only 24th in total offense with an average of 309.4 yards per game. The passing offense is 22nd with an average of 198.9 yards per game. Hurts has thrown six interceptions this season compared to five in 2024.

However, that doesn't mean that the Eagles will send him to the bench. He has helped the team reach the Super Bowl two times since taking over as the starter in 2021, and he has delivered one Lombardi Trophy. The Eagles fully believe he can do so once again.
