The NFL announced the news on Tuesday morning but did not detail when this game will take place. Nor did the league reveal the team that will play the Atlanta Falcons at Bernabéu — home to Real Madrid C.F. These details will come during the full schedule release later in the spring.

This game in Spain is part of a multi-year agreement between the NFL and the City of Madrid and Comunidad de Madrid.

"We are incredibly proud to be part of an NFL regular season game in Madrid at the iconic Bernabéu," said Falcons president and CEO Greg Beadles in a statement. "Atlanta and Madrid are a fitting match as we will host two of Spain's group stage matches in the upcoming FIFA World Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

"This opportunity reflects the continued global growth of both the NFL and the Atlanta Falcons, and we look forward to deepening our connection with our European community by hosting another sporting contest here at home and returning to Europe for the fourth time in six seasons.

"On behalf of our entire organization, we are excited to experience Spain's rich culture and to collaborate with outstanding partners including Real Madrid C.F., the city of Madrid, and the Comunidad de Madrid. The Falcons are honored to play a role in advancing the NFL's international growth."

Nine international games will take place next season across seven countries. The list includes three games in the United Kingdom. The other games will take place in Australia, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, and France.

The trip to Spain will feature a new version of the Falcons. This team now has a new head coach, Kevin Stefanski, leading the way. Quarterback Kirk Cousins will not be on the roster as the team plans to release him. Fellow quarterback Michael Penix Jr. could be under center, or he could still be recovering from a torn ACL.

The rest of the roster will undergo changes during free agency and the NFL Draft. One player who will return is tight end Kyle Pitts. The Falcons used the franchise tag on the veteran to ensure that he won't hit the free agent market.
