Reports of a pending trade surfaced on Monday from ESPN's Shams Charania. He reported that the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat both engaged in talks with the Milwaukee Bucks. They had different offers on the table for Giannis.
Ultimately, the Heat secured the trade while giving up multiple players and draft picks. Miami acquired Giannis and Bobby Portis in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis.
Miami also traded the 13th overall pick in Tuesday's draft, a first-round pick in 2031, a first-round pick in 2033, and a second-round pick in 2033. Finally, the deal includes a pick swap in 2030.
The Heat securing the services of a multi-time MVP continues a tradition for the franchise. This NBA team has swung major deals over the decades while pursuing championships. Giannis coming to town only continues the trend.
Other superstars to make their way to South Beach include LeBron James, Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Bosh, Alonzo Mourning, and Jimmy Butler.
Of this group, only Butler fell short of an NBA title after heading to Miami.
O'Neal won one title with the Heat in 2005-06. James won back-to-back titles in 2011-13. Bosh also won titles while playing alongside James. Mourning won his title with O'Neal.
Now, Giannis will aim to continue this trend as he pairs with three-time All-Star Bam Adebayo. The Heat will aim to take back the Eastern Conference from the Knicks, who just captured the title.
The Bucks, for comparison, will bring in four young players who will continue to gain experience in the NBA. All four are in their 20s and are continuing to develop on the court. Although Herro has averaged 19.5 points per game over seven seasons while earning All-Star honors once.
