The team announced the news on Friday after going 0-4 in a series against the Chicago Cubs. Andy Green will take over as the interim manager for the remainder of the season. The team will then name a new permanent replacement for Mendoza.

Mendoza, 46, took over as manager of the team in 2024. He led the Mets to some early success with an 89-73 regular-season record. The team competed in the playoffs and defeated both the Brewers and Phillies. The postseason run ended with a loss to the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.

The last two seasons have not seen the same success. The Mets had a winning record (83-79) in 2025 but fell short of the postseason. This season, the team started 3-2 but could not maintain a winning record. A 12-game losing streak in April posed particular problems.

The team also dealt with injuries to Juan Soto, Kodai Senga, and Francisco Lindor. The bullpen also lost Clay Holmes to a broken right leg after he took a hit from a 111-mph line drive.

"I want to express my deepest gratitude to Carlos Mendoza for his leadership and unwavering commitment. He represented this organization with integrity and dedication throughout, and I wish him and his family all the best," said Mets Owner, Chairman and CEO Steve Cohen.

"Our commitment to bringing our fans a championship-caliber team has not changed. There is no sugar coating it: this season has been a disappointment and our fans deserve better than what we've delivered."

Green, 48, previously served as manager of the San Diego Padres from 2016-19. The team's best season came in 2017 as it went 71-91. He joined the Mets in 2023 and previously served as senior vice president of baseball development.

Now, he will try to guide the Mets through the rest of another season of struggles.
