The incident occurred during the fourth inning of Friday night's game against the New York Yankees, a 5-2 loss to kick off the Subway Series. He threw a pitch, which Spencer Jones hit back at him. The ball hit Holmes in the leg at 111.1 mph, but the pitcher did not go down.
Holmes jogged towards first base as the play continued. He did not initially appear to be injured, but manager Carlos Mendoza came out to the mound to check on him as the game temporarily stopped.
Imagine getting hit with a Spencer Jones 111 MPH rocket and walking off a fractured fibula like it’s a cramp.

Holmes threw some warmup pitches before facing seven more batters. He ultimately exited the game in the fifth inning and had X-rays done. They revealed that he suffered a fractured right fibula.
"That's the first I've heard of that," Jones, the Yankees batter, told media members after the game. "I'm sorry. He's a friend of mine, we work out in Nashville together. That's tough to hear."
The Mets do not yet know how long Holmes will be out of action after taking a 111.1-mph line drive to the leg. The team noted that fractures can take six weeks to heal, but another factor will come into play.
Holmes sustained the injury in his push-off leg, so that could change the recovery time.
For now, the team will move forward with Nolan McLean, David Peterson, Freddy Peralta, and Christian Scott leading the way in the final two games of the Subway Series.
The team will also likely call up another pitcher from Triple-A Syracuse. Replacement options for Holmes include prospects Jack Wenninger and Jonah Tong.
"It's a huge blow," Mendoza said after the game. "He's been one of the most consistent guys that we had in that rotation."
